Week 3: Tutorial Session

We had a tutorial session to learn how to add sound buttons to flash.

This was generally successful, and i found a tutorial online half way through that helped to explain things very quickly and easily.

I used sounds taken from the internet for the buttons and a sound recording for the introduction page to create a flash animation. This process work has been added to 'WEEK 3'.

Week 2: Sound Journey

Planning and recording a sound journey is quite difficult. I decided with this one to only record a few short clips, as extended clips with extended periods of travel time with no accompaniment would be very boring.

I possibly want to include some comedy/drama/voiceover information into my sound journey. I dont want it to just be a collection of sounds and a treasurehunt as it would be difficult to keep it interesting.

I started my recording at home. I am interested in food, and ambient noise.

PROBLEM: I recorded over 2 hours of clips, but ive had to clip them down hugely in order to export them from my iphone. In the future i will either plan for this, or use different equipment.

Starting in my bathroom i recorded sounds of brushing my teeth.

Then i took some sounds of the journey, and managed to catch a police siren at the beginning of it.

I then took some recordings of Travelling as well as sounds from a restaurant.

It would be a good idea to string these together, and put together a script or fill it in with other noises.

Investigating existing sound journeys

To start, i'm having a look at existing sound journeys, sound map, and audio take from physical environments/objects.

Sound Maps

I found a website called uksoundmap which maps sounds from people across the country according to their location. Anyone can get involved and upload a soud, and you can listen to sounds by going to their website. It utilises audioo and you can upload using your iphone. Almost 1500 people have uploaded so far. I think that this is a great way to listen to different sounds outside your normal environment and would be a fantastic resource for a country-wide sound journey.

Audio Tours

I also found a website for a company that specialises in audiotours, especially those in London. Some of these are available to download for free, so i listened to one of them.

The sound tours are around iconic and compelling landmarks in London. The tours are informative.

I downloaded the brixton tour as it really interested me. The zip extractable file had sound 'bites' i.e. it was broken up and each clip was numbered and headed up seperately. This was very useful if you only wanted to listen to a few individual sections, or if you don't have time to listen to it all since it is very easy to pick up were you left off.

The audio tours are fantastic and so interesting. Almost like a documentary. You hear the vibrant sounds and music. Who says the tour has to just be myserious or just one genre? Why cant it incorporate multiple types of sound journeys?

I am interested in music being incorporated into my final outcome.

I uploaded one section of the Brixton walk to audioboo.

A sound journey for: relaxation

http://www.soundjourney.co.uk/

the human voice in addition to soothing music are used to take the user on a relaxing journey. With meditation and visualisation, the user is often 'transported' and it becomes a very real and vivid experience.

I attempted to find contrasting ways that use sound to take a person on a journey, and i'd like to incorporate elements of all of these into my final outcome as i've found them all very inspiring.

Next steps:

Recording and planning my own journey and sounds.

Week 1

Introduction to the brief
  • Plannning a local sound journey
  • Recording the local sound journey & Exchanging them
  • Uploading to Audioboo

This was he diagram that i used to plan the locations that i was going to focus on when recording my sound journey. I added a few details to it afterwards. It was very useful to have a plan so that it was organised beforehand. I suppose it might be interesting subverting this and recording a sound journey where you yourself have no idea where you're going...

This was the diagram illustrating my classmates sound journey that i followed. I tried to reflect the terrain in the texture/form of the timeline, and tried to make it as visually interesting as possible. Stylistically i like it, and i'd be interested in trying out different ways to visually represent a sound journey.

Ideas: Photography, image collage, textual, even simply 'blank'?
